Fitzgerald, Zhen MHS Outstanding Students

Julia Fitzgerald and Stanley Zhen have received Middletown High School’s Outstanding Students designation for being the top two ranked students in the Class of 2020.

Fitzgerald is ranked No. 1. Zhen is ranked second. Each has a classroom average of higher than 100 percent. Middletown does not use the traditional “valedictorian” or “salutatorian” titles for its top students, instead choosing to recognize them together.

The Orange Ulster BOCES dinner that usually recognizes the top students from each school was canceled due to the New York state schools pause. So was the annual MHS academic awards dinner, where Fitzgerald and Zhen also would have been announced as one of the school’s 21 Honor Graduates (see the list of names). Both are National Honor Society members.

Fitzgerald and Zhen will continue their academic journey in college, after four inspirational high school years that left an impact. Fitzgerald will attend Binghamton University, majoring in biology and minoring in history. Zhen will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and major in aeronautical engineering.

In high school, Fitzgerald earned 42 tuition-free college credits through Syracuse University’s Project Advance (SUPA). She will graduate from the Project Lead the Way Biomedical program, which she says expanded her knowledge of the medical sciences and prepared for the undergraduate pre-medical track. Her goal is to become a surgeon, specializing in trauma or neurosurgery.

She is a member of the STEM club, Yearbook club, Scholastic Bowl, Senior Enrichment and the Book club. She attended Touro Medical College’s MedAchieve/MedExcel program, and worked as a summer intern at Hudson River Healthcare.

Zhen is a recipient of the Rensselaer Medal Award, and the RIT Innovation and Creativity Award. He also was a key member in the growing Robotics club, and helped set the high standard for future MHS teams in this developing program. He was a Math team member, played varsity tennis and was elected as a Student Council representative.

Please join us in congratulating Julia and Stanley on this wonderful accomplishment.
