Freshman Ashley MacCalla became the eighth girl in Middletown school history to reach 1,000 career points in the Middies' 65-40 home victory Monday night over Newburgh Free Academy.
Ashley needed 24 points to reach 1,000. She had 21 when she was fouled as she shot a 3-pointer with 3:49 left in the third quarter. Her first of three foul shots bounced off the rim, then the backboard, and through the basket. You could hear a pin drop in the gym as she made the second and then the third - her 1,000th point.
The crowd erupted. The game was stopped, as she received a special basketball and then posed for photos with her coaches and family. She finished with 32 points, joining an elite group of Middletown female basketball players.
Ashley's name will be placed on a banner in the gymnasium, beneath Stacey Morris, Sherry Morris, Christine Medina, Chantel Anthony, Danielle Ayala, Khadija Campbell and Kiarra Kennedy as 1,000-point scorers. Congratulations, Ashley, on this wonderful accomplishment! Your school and your community are so proud of you!
