"Wolslayer Gate" Named in Coaching Legend's Memory
The gate to the Faller Field Stadium Complex will now be known as "Wolslayer Gate," in memory of Richard "Dick" Wolslayer, a Middletown teaching and coaching legend. The Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution to name the gate at the September 19, 2024 meeting.
Coach Wolslayer peacefully passed away at home on Friday, July 5th with his wife and daughter by his side. He was 84. Dick was born on October 16, 1939 in East Stroudsburg, PA son of Richard and Katherine Stacer Wolslayer. Dick graduated from East Stroudsburg State College and achieved his Master’s in Education at the University of Colorado.
Dick’s connection to his community began in the Middletown school system as Physical Education teacher and coach of various sports. He was best known for his success as the head varsity football coach for Middletown High School. After retiring, his love for teaching and coaching continued as an adjunct instructor at Orange County Community College.
Dick had a huge impact on his students and athletes alike. His legacy was his ability to touch their lives through compassion, fairness and kindness, be that as a mentor, father figure, friend or confidant. He loved watching their growth and development throughout their young lives to adulthood. His heart was huge and had room for anyone to be a piece of it. Dick had an uncanny ability to lift a person up and make them feel valued and put a smile on their face. To Dick it was always “a great day to excel.”
Coach Wolslayer was inducted into the inaugural Middletown High School Wall of Fame in 2023.
