Middletown continues cell phone-free environment

Dear Middletown Families and Caregivers,

I hope this message finds you well and enjoying moments of peace and connection this summer. As we look ahead to a new school year, I want to thank you for your continued partnership. Together, we’ve built an environment where scholars are truly supported and empowered to grow—and there’s a strong sense of Middie Pride flowing through our community.

As we prepare for the 2025–2026 school year, I want to reaffirm our commitment to creating focused, welcoming, and safe learning spaces. A key part of that commitment is maintaining cell phone-free school environments that support student well-being and minimize distractions. This practice—now reinforced by new New York State Education Department legislation—aligns with what we already know: that less screen time during the day means more engagement, stronger peer connections, and better learning outcomes.

Thanks to your support, we’ve already seen great progress. Scholars are more present, classrooms are more collaborative, and students are thriving.

What to Expect for 2025–2026:

  • Grades K–5: Phones must be off and stored in backpacks or designated classroom areas.
  • Grades 6–12: Students will continue using Yondr pouches, locking their phones upon arrival and unlocking them after school.
  • Before/After School: Scholars may use their phones before and after the school day or to contact a parent or caregiver, as long as they have permission from the supervising adult. During after-school activities, scholars are expected to remain engaged and focused on the task or event at hand.

Unauthorized use of cell phones during the school day is not permitted. If a scholar uses a phone without permission, the device will be collected and held for parent or guardian pickup, in alignment with the District Code of Conduct. Consistent expectations help ensure a focused and respectful learning environment for all.

We encourage families to plan for communication needs. School staff are always available to help relay messages during the day.

Stay Connected:

Our schools will host orientation events this summer—please visit our website for details. These are great opportunities to learn more, ask questions, and connect with fellow families.

Thank you again for your partnership. I’m excited for all we will accomplish together in the year ahead.
