Sports Teams Recognized for Incredible Seasons

The April 18 Middletown Board of Education meeting was a big night for Middletown sports teams as wrestling, basketball and track and field were recognized.

Norma Avila, the top wrestler in Middletown’s first-year girls’ program, was honored for winning a Section 9 championship in her first year as a wrestler.

The boys’ basketball team was recognized as it received the Section 9 sportsmanship award by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.

Our indoor track and field teams continued to shine with a season where the program had 15 NYS state meet qualifiers and 16 national championship qualifiers. Our boys team finished second over in the Section 9 championships, in a season where six school records were broken. Aaron Williams placed fifth in the 200-meter dash at the Nike Indoor Nationals

The girls were named a NYS scholar-athlete team, which means at least 75 percent of the team had a combined classroom average of at least 90.

The varsity wrestling team was recognized for its historical season.

Middletown won the Section 9 dual meet championship, the OCIAA Division I title and was named NYS scholar-athlete team for the seventh time. The Middies (21-3) ended the season ranked No. 5 in the state.

Stephan Monchery became the first athlete in school history to win an individual national championship. He also captured the NYS title, becoming the first Middletown wrestler to do so since 1998. Stephan was named the Section 9 wrestler of the year.

Eugene Noboa won Section 9 Assistant Coach of the Year.
Bryson Tibbs won the OUBOCES Officials Sportsmanship Award.
Jason Lichtenstein won the Section 9 Coach of the Year.

Bryson and Jacob Roger won their 100th matches of their careers! Bryson finished with 145 wins (4th all-time). Stephan set the program record (was 157 by Justin Morales) with 201 wins!
Stephan and Bryson became the 2nd and 3rd wrestlers to surpass 100 career pins. 131 and 115 respectively. Stephan, Bryson and DJ won Section 9 titles. Bryson finished 5th in NYS. Rahmiere Bradley finished 4th in NYS.
