Record-setting year for athletes in the classroom

Middletown has set a new school record on the field - and in the classroom!

Middletown had 19 teams qualify for and receive NYS scholar-athlete recognition during the 2025-26 school year, breaking the record 17 set during the 2024-25 school year. To be eligible, 75 percent of a varsity team must have a combined classroom average of at least 90 percent.

"This has been a banner year for Middletown athletics. Earning a school-record 19 NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete Teams across the fall, winter, and spring seasons, surpassing our previous best of 17, is a tremendous accomplishment, and one our entire community should be proud of," said David Coates, Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics.

"In total, 415 student-athletes were honored this year for excelling academically while representing the Middies. That number reflects the dedication of our students, the commitment of our coaches, teachers and the support of families who push our young people to be their best in every arena. We could not be prouder of what these Middies have achieved."

The Middies had six teams qualify during the Fall, 2025 season: Boys' and girls' cross country, girls' volleyball, girls' tennis, girls' swimming and diving, and cheerleading.

Middletown qualified eight teams during the Winter, 2026 season: Boys' swimming and diving, boys' and girls' basketball, cheerleading, boys' and girls' indoor track and field, boys' wrestling, boys' bowling.

Five teams qualified for Middletown during the Spring, 2026 season: Boys' tennis, girls' outdoor track and field, girls' flag football, softball and girls' lacrosse.

Individual athletes were also eligible if their teams didn't qualify, so a total of 415 Middletown scholar-athletes should be recognized for this terrific accomplishment. Congratulations!
