Resolution Condeming Racism

Enlarged City School District of Middletown Board of Education

Resolution condemning racism and affirming our commitment to an inclusive school environment for all

WHEREAS, the Board of Education of the Enlarged City School District of Middletown is saddened by and condemns any events which demonstrates the racism, prejudice and injustice that exists in our country; We also recognize words are just rhetoric until they are turned into action; and 

WHEREAS, racism, intolerance, discrimination or any form of hate have no place in our schools or our society; and 

WHEREAS, we must protect the Constitutional rights of every person in our nation; and 

WHEREAS, we will be empathetic and seek to understand those who have endured discrimination and intolerance as they share their experiences and feelings; and 

WHEREAS, we will continue work to engage our community in meaningful dialogue about the importance of equity and partner with those committed to helping meet the needs of all students; and 

WHEREAS, each of us individually and collectively has a responsibility for creating and nurturing an environment that stands against racism where every child is respected and valued for who they are. As a school district, we will follow the New York State Education Department learning expectations (standards).  We will continue to review our curriculum to ensure it portrays an accurate account of the oppression of all marginalized groups, but even more so the significant accomplishments and contributions of all those who have positively impacted our nation and the world; and 

WHEREAS, the Enlarged City School District of Middletown is committed to modeling acceptance of all people as we work toward our vision of being an innovative community where caring relationships and authentic learning inspire all students; and 

WHEREAS, we will continue to learn. We will seek the perspective of our students of color and our families who may have been overlooked by our society, our community, and our school district. Our school district can be and will be a place of safety in our community and a beacon of light for other school districts and communities, as we build and strengthen trust with those we serve. 

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we, the members of the, Enlarged City School District of Middletown Board of Education stand steadfast in our commitment to foster an inclusive environment where every student, teacher, support professional, parent and community member is treated with dignity and respect. And is empowered to continue fighting for racial justice and human and civil rights for all.
