Drama Club
hosts seminar with Peter Sklar—Broadway
producer and talent scout
JAN.2008—On
Jan. 10 the TTMS Drama Club
hosted a seminar with Peter Sklar—a
Broadway producer & talent scout for the New York
City area. About 80 students and parents were
in attendance.
Sklar discussed what it takes to get into
show business and more. "The kids, and
parents, thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Sklars' lecture,"
said Drama Club advisor and TTMS teacher Sondra
Edelman. "He was very informative and spoke, at
length, about what people in the business look for
and what young people should do to prepare."
Sklar held interviews
with over 40 kids in search of new talent, and
24 of them were invited to attend a week long
performance workshop in either New York City or
London, England. Students who participate in the
NYC workshop will perform in an Off-Broadway
showcase and potentially book an agent or manager. Students who participate in the London workshop will
take classes in Shakespearian and
classical theatre.

Teen Talk radio show features kids signed to
Basement Records
DEC.2007—Several
students that are part of Basement Records at Twin
Towers Middle School were featured on a
Teen Talk Radio program on Dec. 1, 2007. The
radio program, run by teens, deals with issues
and topics relevant to the lives of teens in the
listening area.
According to
Amanda
Mita, music teacher at TTMS, "Basement Records, is
an after school recording studio where students, in
good standing, sign up for scheduled recording times
after school and produce any type of music they
choose. The music must be appropriate for school,
use appropriate language, and promote non-violence."
Students in the
program must sign a contract with Basement Records
which outlines several guidelines for artists,
including: no "D" or "F" grades, no discipline
referrals, and students must be in good standing
with all staff.
The
after school program has been helping kids
focus on improving
their behavior and grades,
and break out
of their shells and promote self-expression
since 2005.
Ball in the House takes to the stage at Twin Towers
Middle School
NOV.2007—Ball
in the House, a
Boston-based vocal a cappella group, performed at Twin
Towers Middle School on Nov. 15, 2007, as part of Arts in Education (AIE) programming
at the school.
Ball in the House is
made up of five guys and their voices—
that's it. The band uses vocal drums/beatbox and
vocal bass under their harmonies to create a sound
that's all
their own.
The group met with students in the chorus groups at Twin
Towers prior to their two afternoon concerts and talked
to students about music,
song writing, rehearsals as well as their personal
experiences growing up as vocalists. Before taking to
the stage, the group worked with students practicing
warm-ups and working on rhythms used in one of their
songs in the show.

Ball in the House also held an evening
performance at the school on Nov.15 and over 250 people
attended the show.

NOV.2007—The
Project Lead The Way (PLTW) curriculum, established at Twin
Towers Middle School & Middletown High School this
fall, is designed to help students understand the real
life implications of technology, math, science and
pre-engineering.
To become an
instructor, and teach PLTW curriculum, teachers must be
certified. Currently, one teacher at Twin Towers Middle
School and one teacher at the high school have completed
PLTW certification.
At Twin Towers Middle School, teacher Judy Ronay will
instruct over 260 eighth graders enrolled in her
PLTW course this school year which lasts 20 weeks.
One half of the eighth grade
class is currently meeting with Ronay every day, and the
other half of the class will meet with her every day in
the spring 2008 semester.
Thirty new computers were purchased for the course at
the middle school and AutoDesk Inventor
software is allowing students to learn
about design, modeling, manufacturing, construction and
alternative energy curriculum to create a
pre-engineering course of study.
“Students hone and strengthen their math, science, ELA,
and research skills to create imaginative and practical
projects as part of the course,” said Ronay.
At the
high school level, PLTW courses are being taken in
conjunction with traditional mathematics and science
classes to prepare students to pursue a formal education
and career in the field of engineering.
"The kids all seem to be
really engaged and enjoying themselves," said high
school PLTW teacher Tim Raney, who teaches Introduction
to Engineering.
Students learn principles
of engineering, digital electronics, engineering design,
aerospace and biotechnical engineering, among other
specialties as part of PLTW curriculum. As of now,
students can take the course Introduction to Engineering
at the high school and additional classes are to be
added next fall. Students also receive college credit on
their high school transcript from Rochester Institute of
Technology for their enrollment in PLTW.
It is expected that PLTW
courses will be offered next school year at Monhagen
Middle School as more teachers in the district become
PLTW certified. |
