Farm life comes to Truman Moon

JUNE 2008—Students got a treat from 4-H members & their animals on June 13 as farm life came to Truman Moon.

Students at the school learned about a variety of animals by visiting different stations featuring animals like goats, sheep, poultry, horses, lamas, and even rabbits.

While at each station, 4-H members shared their experiences on the farm with students and also gave presentations and answered questions about their specific animals.

Principal Donna Napolitano also got in on the action, giving presentations on horses and explaining to children the different parts of the saddle as well as how to ride. Click here for a photo gallery!

APRIL 2008The Chinese Theatre Works group visited Truman Moon on April 7 as part of the school's Arts in Education (AIE) programming. The theatre company's mission is to preserve and promote the traditional Chinese performing arts (including opera, shadow theatre, puppetry, dance and music); to create new works that bridge Eastern and Western aesthetics and forms; and to foster understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture.

Several skits were performed at the school and students even got a chance to try their hand at puppetry.

Truman Moon soup drive a success

Photo of students.MARCH 2008During the months of January and February Truman Moon Primary Center collected 975 cans of soup and other items. With help from staff, students, and community friends like Nicole Brooks and the staff at Ponderosa & Peggy Broccoli, and Shop Rite on Dolson Avenue, the school was able to reach this year’s goal of 500 cans.

Shop Rite joined Truman Moon's efforts by hanging up pictures of kindergarten and first graders throughout the store, and reminded shoppers to pick up treats for their families and donate to a great cause at the same time.

Mrs. MacKay & Ms. Hickman's kindergarteners were top collectors and the top first grade class was Mrs. Babcock’s. Each winning class will receive a tasty reward sponsored by the PTO. All of the donated items were forwarded to RECAP, a local food pantry located at 29 Smith Street, Middletown, NY. If you are in need of food please call 342-3978 & see how to qualify.

Pipers sing and dance for students

FEB.2008—The Middletown High School Pipers performed for first graders at Truman Moon on Feb. 14. The group sang and danced to various selections including: "Knock On Wood," "My Strongest Suit," from Disney's "Aida," "Do You Love Me," "But It's Alright," "Hot, Hot, Hot," and "Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch."  The Pipers are set to compete at Disney in April and used their district-wide tour as extra practice and as a way to connect with younger students that may one day be interested in being a Piper too. After their routine, students took time out to meet students and answer some questions.

Giving back this holiday season

DEC.2007The spirit of giving is alive at Truman Moon Primary Center this holiday season, as Truman Moon staff, with some help from local Middletown community agencies, are giving back.

Boxes of unopened toys, clothing and food filled the nurse’s office at the school as items were collected once again this year for local families and students in need. According to Tenise Wall, Truman Moon social worker, about 70 Middletown students and their families will be receiving gifts as part of the Honesty and Adopt Program established at the school about five years ago.

Truman Moon staff members donated to the fund and gifts were purchased and wrapped by Lisa Francois, library clerk, and Kathleen Motisi, computer teaching assistant at the school. In addition, Wall works with local agencies annually that provide gifts to Truman Moon students and their families—all in the hopes of making their holiday season a little brighter.

"This program tries its best to target families who need that extra support during the holidays. As gifts were delivered to the home of one of a Truman Moon student this week, the mother could not say thank you enough as her eyes began to fill with tears" said Wall. "Making a difference in the lives of our children is our goal. As a school community, Truman Moon can be very proud of that."

Kids get visit from mime

NOV.2007Mime Karen Montanaro visited students at Truman Moon on Nov. 13 for an Arts in Education performance where she conducted a workshop introducing students to the unique thrill of "speaking" without words.

Using the vocabulary of mime, dance, and improvisation, students watched as Montanaro experienced and expressed moods, feelings, and states-of-mind without making a sound.

Montanaro performed mime dances, several sketches and performed a soccer game slide show for kids with the help of Assistant Principal Cliff Moore. Click here to view a photo gallery!

MHS football players and Truman Moon students team up to read

NOV.2007It’s no secret that reading has many benefits—it can improve language, speech, and vocabulary. It’s also no secret that kids love sports.

A recent study, by the Kaiser Family Foundation, indicates that children are significantly influenced by sports and the lives of athletes. According to the study, children learn by observing how they live both on and off the field. That’s why Librarians Mrs. Linton (Truman Moon) and Mrs. Allee (MHS) are collaborating with Coach Barone and having MHS football players read to primary students.

Football players recently visited Truman Moon Primary Center to read to kids. First graders beamed with excitement as football players read and shared some of their experiences about reading. Players talked of the importance of being committed to school work and sports and they also reminded students, that just like anything else, reading takes practice and it’s something students should do every day.

“Our football players are terrific. They love reading and wanted to come to our school to read to our students,” said Mrs. Linton.  “We are proud to have such fine young men influence the lives of our students in such a special way.”

OCT.2007On Oct. 30, Ms. Yegidis' and Mrs. Byrne's first grade classes, and parent volunteers, walked to Southwinds Retirement Home to visit with residents.  Students sang songs, recited poetry and each student formally introduced themselves to five residents. Baked goods, donated by Truman Moon families, and snacks were shared by all. Southwinds contributed the drinks and paper goods.

"We really enjoyed visiting residents and are looking forward to seeing them again sometime next spring," said Mrs. Byrne.  "Thank you to Mid-City Bus Company for donating a bus (on standby) for us in case of inclement weather, which we didn't need  because of the beautiful fall weather we encountered.
