Students
create culminating project at Truman Moon
MAY
2007Mrs.
Kass and Mrs. Babcock's
first grade classes
read "My Robot" in the Harcourt Series and studied solid shapes at the same time. As a culminating
project, the group created the "Robot Forest," which
is filled with many different shapes and sizes of
robots made from boxes, cones, cylinders, spheres
and various other materials.
"The forest stands
outside the library," said librarian Terese Conklin.
"Everyone has been admiring the creativity of these
two classes." |
School
celebrates National Library week
APRIL 2007Truman
Moon celebrated National Library Week with
several exciting events highlighting the value
of books and libraries. Special guest readers
read to students including: Lynda Slesinski,
secretary to the Director of Athletics.
Slesinski is a writer and storyteller and read
from her book If I Could Be With You, and
passed out homemade chocolate chip cookies.
A Reading
Education Assistance Dog,
Kizzy, came to visit first graders as well. As
did Thrall librarians, Bridget Manigo and
Betsy Attreed. Warwick Officer Kevin Halsey and
Middletown Officer Patrick Cunningham
(pictured above)brought
their K-9 dogs Riley and Ivan along with them
and
read books about police officers and K-9 dogs
and explained how K-9s are trained.

Mother
Earth visits school
APRIL 2007"Mother
Earth" visited students in Ms. Ferrara's first grade
class in April 2007. She was beautifully arrayed in all
the colors of the earth. Mother Earth brought
flowers; moss; rocks; and sea shells for the children
to examine. Students were able to experience and
appreciate the beauty of earth. Students learned
about pollution and people; animals and plants;
clean air; water; and soil. |

Truman Moon
celebrates Black History Month with Read-IN
FEB.2007In
honor of Black History Month, all the teachers at Truman
Moon participated in the 18th National African American
Read-In on Monday, February 5. Teachers read books
authored by African Americans and about African Americans.
Students
were treated to a wide range of literary works, said
Librarian Terese Conklin, that included books by authors
Donald Crews, Andrea Pinkney, Marie Bradby, Julius Lester,
Debbie Allen, Nikki Giovanni and Willie Perdomo.
Kindergarten
and first grade classes listened to many stories,
including books about Langston Hughes, Booker T.
Washington, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Donald Crews,
Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Bill Pickett and Martin Luther
King, Jr. All of
these fiction and non-fiction books will be available for
checkout in the library.
Lyle
Cogen returns to Truman Moon for arts-in-education
DEC.2006Lyle
Cogen energized students and staff with tunes from
Broadway on Friday, December 8, at the school. The
show focused on character education by comparing
characters in song and stage to important issues in
the lives of children. Cogen is a teaching artist,
trained in aesthetic education by the Lincoln Center
Institute. She integrates drama and music into
curriculum areas to teach children.

PTO donates books to library
DEC.2006The
PTO donated many beautiful books to the Truman Moon
Library recently. "The children are very excited
about the books and so are we. They have been flying
off the shelves! Thank you to all our hardworking
and generous PTO members," said the school's
librarian. Special thanks also goes to Mrs. Martinez
and Mrs. Scauzillo for their tireless efforts on
behalf of Truman Moon and the library. |

Author and illustrator visits Truman
Moon
students
OCT.2006 Iza Trapani, at right, author
and illustrator of nursery rhymes, visited
Truman Moon Primary Center on Oct. 27, 2006, to
read to first graders from her various books
throughout the day.
According to
Terese Conklin, librarian at the school, "Iza
delighted students by reading and singing her
books. She also explained the process of how
a book is made from the original idea to the
printing press. Each group had the special honor
of helping Iza also create an illustration."
Between performances,
Trapani,
visited classrooms and spoke with teachers. "I
really admire the dedication and warm generous
spirits of the teachers I have met across
the country," she said. "They are doing such
important work. I just make the books. But,
teachers get the children excited about reading
and writing."
After performing her last reading,
Trapani donated
her newest book,
Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush, to
the students at Truman Moon.
Staff
at Truman Moon taking steps to fight breast cancer
OCT. 2006The
staff at Truman Moon Primary Center participated in
the Lee Jeans National Denim Day on Friday, October
6, to raise funds for breast cancer research and
treatment. According to
Cathleen Byrne
at
Truman Moon, "We wore pink ribbon pins, blue jeans
and the color pink. We raised $195 and really
enjoyed being a part of this very worthwhile cause."
Elementary
art teacher receives Artsonia leadership award
SEPT. 2006Greg
Farina, art teacher at Truman Primary Center, was
recently honored by Artsonia for his commitment and
leadership in arts education. Only ten school
teachers per state were recognized across the
nation.
Artsonia, the
world's largest online student art gallery,
presented Farina the honor in late September. The
award recognizes the significant achievement in the
area of technology integration within the school's
art program and his involvement in encouraging arts
education in the Middletown community.
