l MY CHILD NEEDS
TO BRING A LARGE ITEM TO SCHOOL. WHAT DO I DO?
We try to accommodate everyone, but can only do so if
space is available. Generally, if the bus is full, and
the item does not fit on their laps, parents should make
other arrangements to get their child or the item to
school.
l MY
CHILD’S BUS RIDE SEEMS VERY LONG, AND I AM ONLY 5
MINUTES FROM THE SCHOOL. WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT THAT?
All of our elementary routes range from 10 to 60 minutes
long, depending on the school and pick-up area.
Education Law does not contain a maximum length of time
that a pupil may spend riding on a school bus. However,
it is widely accepted that the en route time must be
reasonable. The Commissioner of Education has recognized
numerous factors may be considered in determining
whether the amount of time is reasonable. Many districts
attempt to limit the time en route to one hour, but
there are situations because of distances traveled, that
it is not possible to complete the trip within one hour.
The Commissioner of Education has held, in Judicial
Decisions, that a trip of 1-1/2 hours, in particular
situations, is not unreasonable. |
