Writer in Residence, Georgia Popoff, visits schools

NOV.2007From learning about synonyms to imagery and stanzas, Middletown students are delving into the world of poetry this school year.

Monhagen Middle School (MMS) students got to try their hand at poetry recently with the help of Georgia Popoff, Writer in Residence. As part of the Arts in Education (AIE) programming, established in 2006, professional artists, like Popoff, are visiting schools to bring age-appropriate arts activities to students. Activities promote literacy and student achievement, and are integrated into curriculum and linked to specific New York State standards. Read more here.

Teen Read Week at Monhagen

OCT.2007—Teens at Monhagen read for the fun of it as the Library/ Media Center celebrated the tenth annual Teen Read Week from Oct.15-19. This year’s theme, "LOL @ your Library," encouraged teens to read humorous books and graphic novels just for the fun of it!

Mrs. Bonitz, Monhagen’s library media specialist, feels that "today’s teens seem to have less and less free time, and there are increasingly more activities for them to take part in during what little leisure time they have. That is why it’s important to encourage teens to set aside some time to read."

The Library/Media Center helped to increase teen literacy locally by offering a series of programs for teens during Teen Read Week. Students visited the library with their literacy classes for a Book tasting experience.   There was also  a Guess the Weight of the Pumpkin Contest, daily raffles, and treats.

Students spend the Day in Clay

OCT.2007Cliff Mendelson taught Monhagen Middle School students how to create Native American inspired clay works of art. The day-long workshop, A Day in Clay, was offered at the school as part of Arts in Education programming.

Students in several social studies classes learned about Native American art from Mendelson, and then got the chance to select a design from a variety of Native American books filled with pictures, patterns, and designs. Students traced selected designs onto tracing paper and then transferred those designs onto a soft clay tile. In a few weeks students will paint their masterpieces.

"A Day in Clay was excellent," said Russell Brooks, grade 8 social studies teacher at the school. "Cliff was very helpful and informative. The students enjoyed it and I enjoyed it."
