MMS awarded NYSUT Grant
APRIL 2004
Only 20 NYSUT/Staples Grants were awarded in New York State last month and the MTA had two members as recipients: Library Media Specialist Bette Bonitz of Monhagen Middle School was one of them. Bonitz received a check for $2,000 for the Read and Achieve Program (R.A.P.), which will be implemented in September 2004.

The goal of R.A.P. is to improve academic achievement at Monhagen Middle School by utilizing the School Library/Media Center to enhance student literacy skills taught in the classroom, inspire a desire to read among at-risk and reluctant readers and enrich the reading experiences of all students, grades 6 through 8.This will be accomplished by increasing library access and providing students with a variety of reading and writing opportunities, including new acquisitions to support an expanded Accelerated Reader Program.

Mrs. Bonitz will work closely with classroom teachers to plan, promote, monitor, and assess the R.A.P. program.
