Baergas representing NY at national art conference

Middletown High School News ON Jan 31, 2012

Middletown senior artist Dinah Baergas will represent New York at the National Art Education Annual Conference on March 21 at Washington, D.C.

Baergas, an Illustration student in Vicki McMurray’s class, won the “Youth Art Month” contest, which was sponsored by the New York State Art Teachers Association. Baergas spent about two weeks of class time on her drawing, which was inspired by New York.

“I thought the most symbolic thing was the Statue of Liberty,” Baergas said. “The rest was simple things that I thought I could draw pretty. I thought I had a slight chance (to win), but I’ve never been in this big of a competition before.”

Baergas said her drawing “broke barriers,” because she gained confidence with colors. Her comfort level had been more with grayscale, which is images composed exclusively of shades of gray, varying from black at the weakest intensity to white at the strongest.

This drawing will be used as part of a flag that will be created for the Washington conference, and then fly in the city.

“I really excited,” Baergas said. “I’ve already told the colleges that I applied to, and they are excited for me.”

Baergas, who began drawing at age 4, said she already has received a full scholarship to attend Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia.
