AUGUST 2006—Monday,
August 21, 2006, was Alan Gonzalez’s first day on the job as
the new executive principal at Middletown High School.
He was joined by new house principals Carl Pabon and
Michelle Zernone along with returning principals Tanya
Davis and John Szakmary.
Karen Liparulo, the final house principal to be hired, was
approved by the Board on August 24, 2006.
Gonzalez, Pabon and Zernone were approved by the Board
of Education this summer after an extensive search to
fill administrative positions at the high school.
GONZALEZ, A SEASONED ADMINISTRATOR
Gonzalez
takes the helm of MHS after serving as the principal of
Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in the Hyde Park
Central School District. Mr. Gonzalez also served as the
assistant principal of Fieldstone Secondary School as
well as the assistant principal of North Rockland High
School in Thiells, NY.
He
received a Bachelor’s degree from Bloomfield College in
Business/Marketing as well as a Bachelor’s in Special
Education and English. In addition, Mr. Gonzalez holds a
M.S. from the City College of New York (CUNY) in Special
Education and also received his M.S. in Administration
and Supervision from CUNY. He plans to enroll in the
CUNY Doctoral Program in Education beginning this fall.
Mr. Gonzalez is an Orange County resident, residing in
Monroe, and is an active member of the Monroe Lions
Club. He is also a member of the Lehman College NYC
Mathematics & Writing Project, New York State SANYS,
Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development,
among others. In addition, Mr. Gonzalez has also been
active in athletics over the years. He is a track and
field, hammer and weight thrower and was a member of the
Monroe Woodbury Men’s Softball league. He also coached
several high school and middle school sports teams in
past years, including the Pine Bush girl’s varsity
soccer team, the North Rockland High School varsity
basketball (boys/girls) teams and the Tuxedo High School
varsity boy’s baseball team.
MEET THE NEW HOUSE PRINCIPALS...
Mr.
Pabon,
a Middletown resident, joins the high school after
serving as a middle school principal in the Poughkeepsie
City School District. He also served as the assistant
principal at Poughkeepsie High School for three years.
He
received his Bachelor’s in Psychology as well as a M.S.
in Special Education from SUNY New Paltz, and holds a
school administration certificate from Massachusetts
College of Liberal Arts.
Mr. Pabon’s accolades include receiving the Black
Achievers Award in 2006 as well as the Frederick Douglas
Scholarship (1996) and the Sullivan County Achievement
Award, (1996) among others. He is also fluent in Spanish
and serves on the Dutchess County YMCA board.
Ms.
Zernone
joins the high school administration after serving as an
instructional supervisor in the East Ramapo Central
School District. Prior to coming to Middletown, she
previously worked as a mentor for new principals
(2000-2004) in the NYC Department of Educational
Aspiring Leader’s Program and as a middle school
principal at the Manhattan Institute for Academics and
Visual Arts. In addition, she served as a graduate
professor at Hunter College for three years in the
department of curriculum and teaching.
Ms. Zernone received her Bachelor’s in Literature (minor
in secondary education) from St. Thomas Aquinas College
and went on to earn a M.S. in Humanistic Education from
SUNY New Paltz. Her Advanced Certificate in Education
Administration and Supervision was received in 2000 from
Hunter College.
Ms. Zernone is the co-author of four educational
publications, including: Smart Start 4; Smart
Start: Grade 7; Listen. Take Note! Levels A & B; and
Primary Source Levels A & B.
Ms. Karen Liparulo,
comes to Middletown as a house principal from Onondaga
Central School District in Syracuse, New York, where she
served as a high school assistant principal. In
addition, she served as the Director of Health, Physical
Education and Athletics at Onondaga as well. Prior to
working at Onondaga, Ms. Liparulo
served as the Director of Health Education for the
HIV/AIDS Education Program in the Baldwinsville Central
School District, a suburb of Syracuse, New York.
Ms. Liparulo received her Bachelor's degree in Education
(physical education concentration) from Canisius
College
in 1989 and went on to get her Master's in Education at
SUNY Buffalo. In 2002, she earned her Certificate of
Advanced Study in Educational Administration from SUNY
Cortland.
RETURNING HOUSE PRINCIPALS...
John
Szakmary will be a familiar face to students and
staff at MHS staff again this year. Szakmary joined MHS
administration in 2005 and previously taught science at
the high school. He also completed his administrative
internship at the school and served as Acting Assistant
Principal during the spring of 1983 at MHS.
Since
1985, Szakmary served as a school administrator in other
school districts as an Assistant Principal, Building
Principal, and Assistant Superintendent for grades K–12. Szakmary is a graduate of Ohio State University with
a Bachelor’s degree in Education. He earned a Master’s
degree and Certificate of Advanced Study from SUNY New
Paltz and has completed graduate work at Fordham
University.
Tanya
Davis also returns to MHS this year as a house
principal. Davis was appointed as a Middletown High
School house principal in March 2006.
Before coming to
Middletown, Davis served as the Supervisor of the Social
Studies Department for the East Ramapo Central School
District for four years. She also previously served as a social studies teacher
in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District.
Davis received her Bachelor’s degree in History from
Pace University and her Master’s degree in teaching from
Pace University as well. In addition, she holds a
Certificate of Advanced Study in Administration. |
