Drug sweep
conducted at school—nothing found
Middletown High School was
the site of a drug sweep this November by eleven
police K-9 units from Orange, Sullivan, and Westchester
Counties. The building entered lock-down/lock-out mode
while officers led K-9 units through the school
searching lockers for approximately 45 minutes.
In accordance with the City of Middletown
Police Department, and Lt. Paul Rickard, the search was
conducted randomly and not in response to a tip or any
suspicions. No warning was given to
students,
staff or faculty.
During the search, the dogs alerted on a number
of lockers, which were opened by school personnel, but
nothing was found. According to
Executive Principal Dr. Larry
Ashley, “the search is part of our ongoing effort to
help keep our students safe.” Searches such as
this will be conducted at the high school periodically
he said.
School
administration along with Ken Haverlan, Director of
Security, Health and Safety, as well as School
Resource Officer Charlie Nyland,
were on hand for the search. Following the sweep,
administration met with police and K-9 personnel to
review the search and lock-down/lock-out procedures.
