Congrats
graduates!
JUNE 2004—On
Friday, June 25, 2004, nearly 300 seniors earned diplomas from
Middletown High School during commencement in the Orange
County Community College (OCCC)
gymnasium.
Dr. Rev. William
Best of the Middletown Board of Education welcomed
seniors, family and friends. "Tonight's atmosphere is
filled with Middie pride and much joy and happiness," he
said.
Interim Principal George Vanderzell read letters of
encouragement to the class of 2004 from President Bush
and Governor George Pataki, while Acting Superintendent
Dr. Kenneth Gray spoke of decision making and success in the
future. "Today grads you are all winners," he said.
Students Melissa Knapp and
Laura Gluckman gave commencement addresses, reminding
fellow classmates to never forget the times they shared
together at MHS and to look to the future, as so much
lies ahead. "We feel excitement because we have finally
finished this long adventure called high school," said
Knapp. "We made it!"
Congratulations to those students who also graduated from
Middletown High School on Aug.19, 2004. |
National Library
Week kicked off with book fair
APRIL
2004—MHS
kicked off
National Library Week with its annual MHS Library Book Fair
from April 19-30, 2004.
National Library Week is a national observance sponsored
by the American Library
Association (ALA) and libraries across the country
each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions
of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote
library use and support. |
On the road again—MHS chorus travels to Florida
APRIL
2004—The MHS chorus kicked
off the spring season by hitting the road and traveling
to Florida this April for a variety of performances.
In April, several of
the ensembles competed in the Fiesta-Val Invitational in
Orlando. At the competition, Women's Chorale finished in
first place with a superior rating and the Pipers, who
also performed in Walt Disney World's EPCOT theme park
on April 28, 2004, finished in second place with a superior
rating as well. The Chamber Singers and Men's Chorus
finished in second place with excellent ratings.
In addition, a large
group from the cast of the high school spring musical
production "Anything Goes" traveled to Six Flags Great
Adventure to take part in the Peak Performance
Musical Theatre Festival and Competition. The show
finished in second place out of 11 schools and two
students were recognized with special solo awards. Devon
Riley won the "Outstanding Male Actor" award and Jessica Ruggles won the "Outstanding Female Soloist" award.

Fields to get lights
MARCH
2004—The Board of Education,
after many requests from the Middletown community, is
expecting to "turn on the lights" at both the baseball
and soccer fields.The
Board previously
matched $103,000 the community raised for the project;
but because the bids for the plan were higher than
initially expected, the board is supplementing another
$40,000 in funds to get the project underway.

Foreign Language
department at MHS gets visit from Gary Milgrom
MARCH 2004—The Foreign Language department at MHS held a special
workshop with guest speaker Mr. Gary Milgrom, a veteran
Spanish teacher at J.F. Kennedy High School. Mr. Milgrom has
taught in college, junior high and now teaches classes
at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He was named
Teacher of the Year in NYC twice and is the author of
three textbooks: Spanish for Communication, French
for Communication and Italian for Communication.
"He
shared his creative ideas and his positive approach to his
profession," said Grace Ford, chair of the Foreign
Language department. "His enthusiasm is contagious.
It
was a wonderful way for us to recharge our batteries and
return to the classroom with some new ideas." |
