Market Day at
Mechanicstown
MAY 2004—Mechanicstown held its culminating
activity for the 2003-04 school year, on May 27, 2004,
called Market Day. Market
Day is reminiscent of a street fair, only it is indoors
throughout the hallways of Mechanicstown. Students
use micro-money to purchase items from the
MicroBusinesses located throughout the school.
"Each MicroBusiness
participates in some way," said Principal Short. "Our Cottage industries sell
their products, Microcops keep the peace and our food
vendors are in full swing." Specials thanks to staff,
parents and volunteers who helped make the day fun for
all!
Mechanicstown
awarded
NYSUT Grant
APRIL 2004—Only 20 NYSUT/Staples Grants were awarded in New York
State and the MTA had two members as
recipients: Kristine Hanington, of Mechanicstown, was one
of them! Ms. Hanington received a check for $2,000,
which will be used to take the entire third grade, over
200 students, to a cultural festival in Yorktown
Heights, NY.
The festival will help
enhance the schools social studies curriculum, said Ms. Hanington, by touching on the cultures from five
different continents as well as introducing animals from
some of those areas. "We are really excited to be
afforded this opportunity," she said.
Construction
underway
MARCH 2004—Construction is underway at Mechnicstown for a project
that was approved by voters in December 2001. The new cafeteria is
scheduled to be completed by the end of the school year,
said Buildings and Grounds Superintendent Tom Scott. "At
the same time, we're progressing with the construction
of 12 new classrooms." The school's front
parking lot will also be overhauled this summer, which
will improve traffic flow and provide safety
improvements. Students
