pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students this spring.

School raises more than $5,000 for Pasta for Pennies
Chorley Elementary School presented a contribution
of $5,415.14 to
Barbara Gallagher on Friday, March 5,
for Pasta for Penniesa national fundraising program
in partnership with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
(LLS).
More than two million elementary, middle, and high
school students participate in the program
nationally each year, bringing in their spare change
and donations to benefit the LLS' school & youth
campaign.
Students
learn ABCs of getting along
First-graders at Chorley Elementary School recently took
part in the ABCs of Getting Along Workshop. The
workshop, led by Barbara Driscoll, of the Dispute
Resolution Center, discussed the topic of anger with
students and examined some healthy ways to control it.
Students also explored appropriate means to handle peers
as part of the workshop, which utilized songs, poems,
skits, and puppets to engage students and encourage
participation.
District launches SchoolMessenger
Keeping
students, parents, and the community informed isn't just
importantits a priority in Middletown. As a result,
the district has launched
SchoolMessengera
notification system that delivers voice, e-mail, and SMS
messages to users on matters such as attendance, events,

Donations help Chorley students
Eighty-six children from 31 disadvantaged
families at Chorley Elementary School enjoyed special gifts
during the holiday season thanks to the generous
donations from a host of community supporters.

Career
Week inspires
students
More
than 20 local professionals spoke to students
about their professions during Career
Week, held from October 26-30 at the school.
Students from
kindergarten to first grade learned
about various professions, and according to Assistant
Principal
Ivette
Figueroa
there has been no shortage of student
excitement.
"Our
kids
are excited to meet and hear from the professionals,"
Figueroa said. "An event like this, which educates
students ab out
future opportunities, helps motivate them at a young age to
work hard towards their goals or a future career."
Professionals
visiting the school included police officers, doctors,
a lawyer, EMT workers, a hot air balloonist,
a
martial arts instructor, a horse trainer, and
a food
services manager.
Firefighters teach fire safety, prevention
Middletown
firefighters
provided
fire safety and prevention tips to students
at
Chorley Elementary School
during Fire
Prevention Week, held October 5-9. Students watched a fire safety video and
listened as firefighters emphasized
the importance of having working
smoke detectors in the home and staying away from items
such as matches
and lighters.
What's new with the flu?
With
health officials expecting
the seasonal
flu and
H1N1 virus to impact schools and communities,
the
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued
recommendations
and precautions parents can
take to help their child from contacting the seasonal flu
and H1N1 virus.

City Schools commemorated the eighth anniversary of 9/11 on
Friday
with
district-wide moments of silence, in memory
of those lost in the attacks, and a
variety of activities centered around Patriot Day.
