Chorley wins second place in Scholastic Book Fair Scrapbooking contest
J. W. Chorley placed second in the Scholastic Book Fair Scrapbooking contest recently, winning $100. Over 1,000 schools participated in the event said PTO President Nancy Gonzalez. Scholastic asked participating schools to make a scrap book of their most recent book fair and enter it in the contest.

The school held its book fair from October 18-22, and its theme was "Red, White and Blue, Reading is All American." Throughout the week parent volunteers took photos of events such as Family Night and collaborated with Gonzalez to create the book. Congratulations to all those who participated in the event!

Students apply democratic principles in class election
NOV. 2004-Mrs. Brown's class participated in their own "Presidential Elections," on November 2, at Chorley Elementary School. As a culminating activity, the children in nominated two students for "Class President," and two students for "Class Vice President." The children were nominated based on their classroom citizenship and behavior, being serious learners, and being well liked and respected by their peers.

"This was a wonderful opportunity to have students apply democratic principles and have a lot of fun," said Mrs. Brown. Candidates campaigned by writing a persuasive essay with their parents, and presented them to three classes. The children then cast their votes in a private booth, the votes were tallied and the winners announced.

Fire Prevention Week
OCT. 2004-On October 7, students attended assemblies as part of Fire Prevention Week. Students learned a variety of information regarding this topic and can get more helpful practice on fire safety by asking Sparky, the spokesdog of the National Fire Protection Association's Web site.
Art displayed at fall festival
OCT. 2004-The Chorley fall festival celebration, held Oct. 28 & 29, allowed teachers and students alike to showcase their class work. Teachers employed many aspects of technology, according to technology teacher Ms.
