BOARD OF EDUCATION
MIDDLETOWN, NEW YORK
FEBRUARY 18, 2004
A special meeting of the Board of Education of the Enlarged City School District of Middletown, New York was held Wednesday, February 18, 2004, at the Board of Education Office, 223 Wisner Avenue, Board President Robin Markovits, presiding.
Present: Mr. Crescenzo, Mrs. Elliott, Mr. Estrada, Mrs. Knapp,
Mr. McCormack, Mr. Perrino, Mrs. Botti, Mrs. Markovits – 8.
Absent: Dr. Best - 1.
Others Robert J. Hanna, Orange-Ulster BOCES Superintendent
Present:
Mrs. Markovits called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. Mr. McCormack made a motion, seconded by Mr. Perrino, to have an executive session to discuss the resignation of the Acting Superintendent of Schools and the appointment of an interim superintendent. Motion was unanimously approved.
Public session resumed at 6:48 p.m.
Mrs. Elliott made a motion, seconded by Mr. McCormack, to approve the following resolution:
Resolved, that the Board of Education accepts the resignation of Patricia M. McLeod from the position of Acting Superintendent of Schools effective February 19, 2004; and
Be it further resolved that Patricia M. McLeod be re-assigned to her permanent tenured position of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction with the provisions of her contract as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
Ayes: Crescenzo, Elliott, Estrada, Knapp, McCormack, Perrino, Botti, Markovits – 8. Noes: None. Motion was unanimously approved.
Mrs. Markovits thanked Mrs. McLeod for her work as acting superintendent, noting that she had assumed this position during a time of turmoil in our District, when staff was working under incredible stress and daily scrutiny.
Mrs. Elliott made a motion, seconded by Mr. Estrada, to approve the following resolution:
Resolved, that effective February 19, 2004, the employment contract with Patricia Reilly approved by Board resolution dated July 9, 2003, be voided and that she be re-assigned to her probationary appointment approved at the July 5, 2001, meeting of the Board of Education, as follows:
Tenure Area: Curriculum/Instruction Administrator
Type: Probationary Appointment (3 years)
Effective Date: August 6, 2001 – August 5, 2004
Certifications Status: School District Administrator (SDA)
Assignment: Assistant Administrator to Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction -- District
Ayes: Crescenzo, Elliott, Estrada, Knapp, McCormack, Perrino, Botti, Markovits – 8. Noes: None. Motion was unanimously approved.
Mrs. Markovits said that Mrs. Reilly was instrumental in making sure that the work of the curriculum and instruction office continued during the past year.
Mrs. Elliott made a motion, seconded by Mr. McCormack, to approve the following resolution:
Resolved, that Dr. Robert J. Hanna, Superintendent of Schools of the Sole Supervisory District of Orange and Ulster County, be and hereby is appointed to serve as Interim Superintendent of Schools pending the Board’s appointment of an Acting Superintendent of Schools. He shall serve for whatever time the parties mutually agree and at no compensation. This period of service may be discontinued by either party at any time.
Ayes: Crescenzo, Elliott, Estrada, Knapp, McCormack, Perrino, Botti, Markovits – 8. Noes: None. Motion was unanimously approved.
Mrs. Markovits welcomed Dr. Hanna to the District. Dr. Hanna said that he will build on the good cooperative relationship between Orange-Ulster BOCES and the Middletown School District. Dr. Hanna will also assist the Board in finding an acting superintendent, pending the appointment of a superintendent of schools.
There being no further business, at 7:00 p.m., Mrs. Elliott made a motion, seconded by Mrs. Knapp, to adjourn the meeting. Motion was unanimously approved.
