Literacy Program
Overview
The Middletown City School District provides literacy and language instruction for students in grades Pre-K through 12 that is designed to support students in becoming proficient readers, writers, listeners, and speakers. The district maintains a comprehensive literacy instructional model as outlined in the Literacy Framework and English Language Arts Scope and Sequence. The framework provides teachers with a methodology of "how to teach literacy," while the scope and sequence provides teachers with the "how to teach and which materials to use that will best meet the needs of all students." Incorporated in these documents are systematic ongoing assessments that help teachers form their instruction.
Curriculum
To help students meet or exceed the New York State English Language Arts Standards, the district has outlined an instructional framework that provides teachers with a variety of approaches.
In addition, the district developed a scope and sequence for each grade level which provides consistent instruction and materials for teachers to use that are aligned with state standards. The district also developed literacy assessments that are designed to help teachers set guidelines for assessing students. These include the use of writing rubrics.
